ECE R112 establishes a global guideline that defines requirements for the approval of headlights and auxiliary lamps for vehicles. The aim of this regulation is to improve road safety by ensuring consistent and reliable street lighting.

What is the purpose of ECE R112?

Headlights and auxiliary lamps that meet ECE R112 standards undergo rigorous testing. These tests ensure that the lighting is bright and stable without dazzling other road users. This means that as a driver, you have improved visibility on the road and can detect obstacles in a timely manner.

Which E-numbers do headlights need?

  • E-Mark: This consists of a circle with the letter "E" and a number. The number indicates the country of approval. View the E mark numbers by country here
  • C: Indicates that the lamp is approved for passing beam (dipped beam).
  • R: Indicates that the lamp is suitable for high beam (driving beam).

What does ECE-approved mean exactly?

Next to the E-marking is an approval number that confirms the lamp meets the ECE R112 requirements. This number usually starts with two digits that indicate the latest technical amendments.

Approval of auxiliary lamps

Auxiliary lamps such as headlights and driving lights must comply with ECE R112 standards. This means they must have an approval with the E-marking and the approval number. By paying attention to these markings, you can ensure that a headlight or auxiliary lamp meets ECE R112 standards, providing safe and reliable lighting.

Update: ECE R149 replaces the ECE R112 regulation

Since November 14, 2021, ECE R149 has completely replaced R112 for new certifications. This new regulation also replaces the previous ECE R123 and R119 and introduces improved requirements for the approval of high and low beams (Adaptive Front Lighting Systems – AFS). These requirements focus on optimizing the performance of headlights under various driving conditions, such as curves and weather conditions.

Existing ECE R112 certificates for products certified before the expiry date remain valid. However, new products must comply with ECE R149 requirements. This streamlining of regulations increases road safety and provides more clarity for manufacturers.
