ECE R149 is an international regulation that establishes uniform technical requirements for the approval of vehicle lighting systems. This regulation replaces previous standards such as ECE R112 and ensures that all approved lighting products are consistent, reliable, and safe.

ECE R149 focuses on the performance of headlights, high beams, low beams, and adaptive front lighting systems (AFS) to ensure optimal visibility and safety on the road under various driving conditions. By complying with ECE regulations, manufacturers and consumers can trust that the lighting meets the highest international standards.

Why is ECE R149 important?

  • Safety: Lighting that complies with these regulations provides optimal illumination and visibility, which is essential for your safety on the road. It prevents glare for oncoming traffic and ensures that you can see the road and obstacles clearly.
  • Legal Compliance: By choosing approved lighting, you ensure that you comply with the latest legal requirements, which is important to avoid issues during vehicle inspections or traffic checks.

Which lighting is included:

  • Headlights for high beam and/or asymmetric low beam: For a wide range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
  • Adaptive Front Lighting Systems (AFS): For vehicles equipped with advanced lighting systems that adjust to driving conditions.
  • Fog lights: For improved visibility in foggy weather.

Lastly, light bars and work lights are also subject to stricter requirements. Ensuring that these lights meet the latest standards.

How do you recognize approved lighting?

Lighting that meets the regulations has special markings that you can check:

  • E-mark: A circle with the letter "E" followed by a number indicating the country where the approval was granted. More information about the E-mark.
  • Goedkeuringsnummer: Dit nummer bevestigt dat de verlichting voldoet aan de ECE R149-normen.
  • Reference number: For high beams, this number indicates the maximum light intensity in thousand candela.

ECE R149 replaces previous regulations

Since November 14, 2021, the ECE R149 regulation has completely replaced several previous regulations, including ECE R112, R123, and R119. This new regulation introduces stricter and improved performance requirements for vehicle lighting, such as high beams, low beams, and adaptive front lighting systems (AFS).

By replacing the old standards, ECE R149 ensures that all approved lighting products are consistent, reliable, and safe, and comply with the latest international standards.

This means that manufacturers must now meet higher requirements to ensure that their products provide optimal lighting and visibility under various driving conditions, which is essential for road safety.

Does ECE R10 remain in effect?

Yes, ECE R10 remains in effect and is still relevant. ECE R10 specifically focuses on the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of vehicle components. It ensures that electrical and electronic devices in vehicles do not cause or experience interference from electromagnetic emissions. Compliance with the ECE R10 regulation is essential for the proper functioning of the CAN bus system and to prevent a CAN bus error.
